Ackerman named NAIA Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced its weekly individual awards for the women’s soccer team. Maria Ackerman of Carroll was named the NAIA Defensive Player of the Week in women’s soccer. Ackerman was selected based on her performance from Aug. 5-25 and was chosen from a pool of conference/Continental Athletic Conference (Independent)/Independent group nominees.

The Fighting Saints’ first official competition week ends with a bang, as goalkeeper Maria Ackerman was named NAIA National Player of the Week.

Ackerman, together with teammate Delaney Moczan (Las Vegas, Nev. / SO), was named Cascade Collegiate Conference Player of the Week on Monday.

Her personal accolades continued on Tuesday when she was named the Carroll women’s soccer program’s first NAIA Player of the Week, either on offense or defense.

The 2023 All-CCC first-team goalkeeper made an impression as a freshman, and three games into her sophomore season, she appears poised for another standout season.

“We are thrilled to have both Maria and our team recognized on a national level,” said head coach David Thorvilson. “Traveling and playing teams that are completely new to us is always difficult, and playing two games in a row on the road against teams like Taylor (Ind.) and Indiana Tech makes it even more difficult. Maria was outstanding as a goalie all week and made great saves when we needed them.”

  • In three games at the start of the 2024 season, Ackerman saved a total of 22 balls, achieving a hit rate of 91.7%.
  • Since they only conceded two goals during the same period, their goals against average was 0.67.
  • Ackerman recorded her first shutout win of the year against the University of Lethbridge in Canada.

The Carroll Women have a week off from competition before heading to Billings next week for two games against NCAA Division II opponents Black Hills State (SD) and MSU Billings.
