Galaxy Z Fold 6 battery and charging: Some good news and some bad news

Battery life and charging have – historically – not been the strongest aspects of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series. Has that changed with the new Galaxy Z Fold 6?
Well, there’s not much in the Z Fold 6’s spec sheet that would suggest meaningful battery upgrades on Samsung’s big foldable phone of this year, but our battery life tests show otherwise!
Although the battery capacity has not increased significantly, Galaxy Z Fold 6 lasts longer than the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and is currently one of the foldable phones with the longest battery life.

Overall, however, the Z Fold 6 ranked 57th in our Battery Score ranking among the phones we’ve tested over the past two years. The number may seem high, but remember that it’s still a good place for a foldable phone.

When it comes to charging, nothing has improved compared to the last generation. In fact, our measurements showed that the Z Fold 6 is even slightly slower to charge than its predecessor, ranking 72nd among all the phones we’ve tested over the past two years.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is pretty average in terms of overall battery life compared to traditional non-foldable devices. With an average result of 5 hours and 33 minutes, it falls short of our average battery life of six hours and 39 minutes.

Let’s examine how it compares to the competition.

First, our web browsing test, which emulates a browsing flow with the screen manually set to 200 nits brightness. In this particular test, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 does a perfect job and ranks in the upper range in terms of battery life with a result of 12 hours and 42 minutes, clearly surpassing the galaxy Z-Fold 5However, both the OnePlus Open and the PixelFold Technically last longer, but the difference is usually marginal.

YouTube test results

In our video streaming battery test, which is again performed at 200 nits brightness, Galaxy Z Fold 6 achieves a very decent battery life of seven hours. This is slightly better than the galaxy Z-Fold 5but both the OnePlus Open and the PixelFold last a little longer. However, all four competitors are in the same zip code.

3D gaming test results

Just like the Galaxy Z Flip 6, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 our 3D gaming test with flying colors. It reaches 10 hours and a half, which is better than the galaxy Z-Fold 5The OnePlus Openand in particular the Google Pixel Fold. The reason for this could be the much faster and more efficient GPU in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. We’re not complaining, this is good news for the gamers who already have their eyes on the latest foldable Samsung!

Charging upgrades for Galaxy Z Fold 6

Nothing new has happened in charging in recent years.

In contrast to the battery life of the Galaxy Z Fold 6which saw a decent boost, there are no pleasant surprises when it comes to charging speeds. Samsung says the Z Fold 6 will charge to 50% in about 30 minutes using a 25W adapter and 3A USB-C cable, which is the same wording it used for the last generation. There’s also no word on improved wireless charging capabilities.

Here are the Galaxy Z Fold 6 loading speeds.

  • 25W wired charging
  • 15W wireless charging
  • 4.5W wireless recharging
  • No charger included

Wired charging

How does all this translate to wired charging speed? Here are the figures:

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 charges a little slower than the Galaxy Z Fold 5 – both phones take a little less than an hour and a half to fully charge. In general, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 charges slower than its predecessor after both 15 and 30 minutes of charging, so it is obvious that the charging speed has been reduced, probably to minimize the heat generated during charging.

The OnePlus Open is the undisputed champion in the charging test thanks to its fast 67W power adapter that charges the phone in about 40 minutes. The PixelFoldis at the other end of the spectrum and charges the slowest of all four foldable devices.

Wireless charging

In terms of wireless charging, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 also loads much slower than the galaxy Z-Fold 5 according to our tests. The difference is quite dramatic: three hours and 20 minutes for the new device and just over two hours for the galaxy Z-Fold 5.
