Student injured after head-on collision between school bus and garbage truck in Spanish Fork

According to officials, several students were injured in a head-on collision between a school bus and a garbage truck in the Spanish Fork area.

The accident was reported Thursday afternoon at approximately 400 North 630 West.

Authorities said there were about 40 students on the bus. Three high school-aged students and the garbage truck driver were taken to the hospital. All suffered minor injuries, authorities said.

While the garbage truck was traveling eastbound and the school bus was traveling westbound (both on 400 North), the school bus attempted to turn south toward Spanish Fork High School, officials said.

The cause of the crash is still being investigated.

Officials confirmed the bus was transporting high school students from Washington County.

Steve Dunnam of the Washington County School District said the occupants of the bus were the Dixie High School girls soccer team, which was scheduled to play Spanish Fork High School tonight.

Dunnam said the Alpine School District will provide the team with a bus during their stay in the area.

Jimena Fuentes is an assistant coach for the Spanish Fork soccer team and was behind the bus when the accident happened.

“When the garbage truck came, the bus was turning left and you could immediately see that there was going to be an accident,” Fuentes said.

When she saw what was happening, she called and informed the rest of the team.

“We were getting ready to warm up and a few of our girls went over to help the girls and support us,” said Josias Solorzano, who also serves as assistant coach.

The girls from Spanish Fork brought ice and water and even accompanied the girls from Dixie High to the locker room.

Due to the crash, it was decided to cancel both scheduled games.

“It was a back and forth of ‘yes, we’re playing,’ and then no, we’re not playing,” Fuentes said. “But they all took it well and just made sure the other girls were OK, mentally and physically.”

“It was cool that they were more concerned about the girls’ well-being than the game,” Solorzano said.

The condition of the three girls and the driver is unknown, but the uninjured Dixie High athletes seemed to be in good spirits despite everything they had experienced.
