Attracting services to Dubuque Regional Airport and retaining employees are top priorities for Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG) – The city of Dubuque’s top priorities for the next year have been set.

Every August, the Dubuque City Council narrows down a list of over 100 goals to about ten objectives to guide city policy.

“Goal setting is like the Super Bowl for me,” says Councilwoman Katy Wethal. “It’s where I take all the information my constituents have given me throughout the year and try to put it into action.”

The City Council has identified the following as Dubuque’s top priorities for 2024-2025:

  • Comprehensive fire station locations and staffing: workshop presentation, implementation and financing advice
  • Retaining and attracting workers in the city: orientation and financing
  • Catfish Creek Sewer Project – Old Mill Road Lift Project
  • Development of Chaplain Schmitt Island
  • Comprehensive Park Maintenance/Renewal Plan: Condition Assessment, Needs, Plan Development, Alignment and Financing
  • Fully staffing and recruiting police forces: assessment of best practices, report with options, guidance, advocacy and funding
  • Future strategy and action plan for the air service: orientation and joint plan for financing
  • Implementation of the Central Avenue Revitalization Plan: Adoption, Direction, City Actions and Financing
  • Road Maintenance/Rehabilitation Program: Management and Financing
  • RAISE Grant and Matching Fund for Construction: Leadership and Financing

Dubuque Mayor Brad Cavanagh told TV9 that restoring flight operations is critical to the community’s growth.

“We need it to be able to provide the services that we need in our community, to have the economy that we have in our community,” Cavanagh explained. “So that people from this community can visit their family members. If you want to be a place to live where people are connected to the rest of the world, you have to have air service.”
