Youth participation in organized sports increases – Indianapolis news | Indiana weather | Indiana traffic

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Here’s the good news: A new study finds more and more kids are participating in organized sports.

But here’s the bad news: children from lower-income families can no longer afford to buy them.

The study, conducted by researchers at Ohio State University, used data from the National Sports and Society Survey to analyze the sports experiences of nearly 4,000 Americans ages 6 to 18. The study, published in the journal Leisure/Loisiralso examined how various social factors influenced youth participation in sport.

Children from higher-income families and those with college-educated parents were more likely to participate in organized sports.

“Childhood social class plays a role in whether one has the opportunity to participate in organized sports, which is a relatively new development,” said Chris Knoester, lead author of the study and professor of sociology at Ohio State University, in a press release. “We found that privileged families appear to use their advantages to strategically and purposefully invest in participation in organized sports. This can provide great benefits to their children.”

One of the study’s key findings was that participation in organized sports has increased significantly over time. However, younger generations are also more likely to give up sports before reaching adulthood. The researchers found that more than half of those who participated in organized sports quit before their 18th birthday.

Another important finding: children whose parents were sports fans or athletes themselves were significantly more likely to do sports.
