Havasupai Falls closed indefinitely; cleanup begins after devastating flood

HAVASUPAI INDIAN RESERVATION, AZ (AZFamily) — The search for the woman who went missing after being swept away by a flash flood near Havasupai Falls is over, and recovery efforts are now beginning after destructive storms hit the area.

Search crews found the body of 33-year-old Chenoa Nickerson of Gilbert over the weekend after several days of searching.

Due to flooding in the region, over 100 people had to be evacuated by helicopter. Parts of the Havasuapai tribal community were damaged.

The crystal-clear waters of Havasupai National Park normally look crystal clear, but during a flash flood late last week they turned into raging brown water, stranding hikers.

“The immediate response was to make sure we got everyone to higher ground and to safe locations, including the hundreds of tourists who were in the canyon at the time,” tribal spokeswoman Abbie Fink said.

Among those flown out were some tribal members who had to return home due to flood damage.

“The rest are in their homes or living with others if their home was damaged,” Fink said. “We’ve heard reports that some tribal homes have been damaged, water damage and other things. Also some public buildings in Havasupai.”

Despite the hardships, the tribe members took in stranded hikers.

“The tribe took on the responsibility of taking care of the tourists that were there at that time,” Fink said. “So they shared their food and water and other things, you know, blankets and other things.”

Delivering supplies to the tribe is a challenge: they have to be delivered by helicopter or walk miles into town, but with roads impassable, this will make reconstruction efforts even more difficult.

The Arizona Army National Guard was called over the weekend to help search for Nickerson, who also provided assistance to the tribe.

“Fortunately, there were plans to ship the relief supplies before the flood and the National Guard was able to deliver most of it over the weekend,” Fink said.

During the cleanup, Havasupai will remain closed to hikers and tourists indefinitely so the state, federal government and tribe can assess the damage and begin repairs.

“There is no estimated date for reopening yet, but we are confident we can do so shortly,” Fink said.

The tribe is working to get donations to the remote area. As donation information becomes available, Arizona’s family will update this story.
