Joliet man charged with aggravated drunken driving in fatal crash near I-80 – Shaw Local

A Texas driver involved in a 2023 crash in Joliet that killed a 25-year-old passenger has been charged with driving under the influence.

Will County Judge Art Smigielski signed an arrest warrant Friday for Cesar Carrillo-Castro, 29, of Joliet, on nine misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence, according to court records.

Carrillo-Castro is accused of driving a Volkswagen Passat while under the influence of alcohol on McDonough Street in Joliet on December 4, 2023, and was involved in an accident that killed 25-year-old Joseil Escalonda-Gomez of El Paso, Texas.

Escalonda-Gomez was a passenger in the vehicle and was pronounced dead on December 5, 2023, at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

A criminal complaint alleged that Carrillo-Castro’s violation of the alcohol-driving ban was an “immediate cause of death.”

Carrillo-Castro was also accused in the criminal complaint of causing serious bodily harm to three other people in the accident.

Last year, Joliet Police Sergeant Dwayne English said Escalonda-Gomez was one of five passengers in a Volkswagen Passat who were seriously injured in the crash at the intersection of McDonough and South Chicago streets.

The area is located near Interstate 80.

Escalonda-Gomez was a passenger in the back seat of the vehicle, English said. The Volkswagen Passat collided with a semi-truck traveling south on Chicago Street.

“It is believed that the Passat collided with the trailer of the semi-trailer,” English said.

Joliet Police and Fire Departments responded to a crash at the intersection of Fourth Avenue and South Chicago Street early Monday morning, December 4, 2023.
