Derek Hough and his wife Hayley Erbert are celebrating a special milestone.

In a joint Instagram post on Monday, August 26, the couple remembered that it was “a year ago” when they got married. On the occasion of their first wedding anniversary Dancing with the stars The dancers shared a video filmed on their wedding day showing them holding hands while enjoying a scenic walk along the oceanfront cliff in Monterey, California.

In the post’s caption, Derek, 39, reflects on the ups and downs he and his “gorgeous wife” Erbert, 29, have experienced over the past year since she underwent an emergency craniectomy in December 2023 after being hospitalized with a cranial hematoma.

“This past year has been a journey full of challenges, blessings, difficulties and triumphs,” Derek wrote to his wife. “Your grace and beauty have shone brightly throughout, reminding me every day how blessed I am to walk this path with you.”

“But above all, this year has been a testament to the power of love – our love. Love truly conquers all,” he continued. “Here’s to many more years of facing life together, with love leading the way.”

Derek concluded his sweet anniversary message by saying, “I love you more than words can express. Happy anniversary ❤️.”

Friends and family members of the couple left their congratulations in the comments section, including Derek’s sister Julianne Hough. “I love your love ❤️,” she wrote.

Emmanuel Acho commented, “Happy anniversary everyone! Thank you for being such a great example of active love,” while Sarah Hyland simply expressed her admiration with a series of emojis, “❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️.”

Derek and Erbert, who have been together since 2015, married on August 26, 2023, in the middle of a redwood forest in Monterey, surrounded by 106 guests.

“We got married right in front of this mother tree, which is surrounded by all these smaller trees,” Erbert told PEOPLE at the time. “They all drop seeds and it creates a kind of army of children protecting the mother. The symbolism behind it was beautiful. We are here planting our seeds to grow our family.”

While Erbert recovered from her brain surgery, Derek dedicated his 2024 Creative Arts Emmy Award (for outstanding choreography for a variety or reality program for his work on DWTS) to his wife in an emotional moment.

“Exactly one month ago, I was in the hospital,” he said during his acceptance speech at the awards ceremony on January 4, fighting back tears. “One month ago, there was a life-changing moment that reminded me to truly appreciate and savor every moment.”

“I want to dedicate this to my beautiful wife,” Derek continued. “Your strength and courage this entire month has been incredible. You inspire me every day.”

In July, the couple vacationed together in Iceland, which Derek told PEOPLE was like a “second honeymoon” for them.

“We were married and then we were doing tour rehearsals, then we were on tour and then in the hospital, and then we were back in the rehearsal room and then back on tour,” he explained. “For us, it was like, ‘Okay, we need a time to really have an adventure and get out there.’ I told (Erbert) that this really feels like our second honeymoon.”
