Patriot League announces women’s soccer players of the week (26.08.24)

BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania – When the league office announced the honors Monday, American and Navy each received two Patriot League women’s soccer weekly awards. Army West Point received one weekly award.

Navy senior forward Alexa Riddle was named Patriot League women’s soccer offensive player of the week, while classmate Rylee Rives was named midfielder of the week after totaling four goals and three assists in the Mids’ wins over Sacred Heart (5-3) and FDU (3-2) last week.

American freshman Addison Roemer was named Patriot League women’s soccer goalkeeper of the week after stopping four shots in an unexpected 2-0 win over Maryland. Her junior teammate Eliza Fisher was named Defensive Player of the Week after keeping the Eagles’ defense under control in their first win over a major conference opponent since 2004.

Army West Point forward Bella Conti was named Patriot League women’s soccer Rookie of the Week after totaling five points with two goals and an assist last week, including two goals in a 3-2 win over UMass.

American forward Brooke Steel, midfielder Izzy Kadzban (graduate student), junior forward Bella Cooke (Army West Point), senior defender Keira Vesy, senior midfielder Teresa Deda (Bucknell), junior goalkeeper Maggie Ousouljoglou (Lehigh), junior forward Baylee DeSmit (Loyola Maryland) and senior defender Jess Korman received honorable mentions for their performances last week.

The Patriot League Women’s Soccer Players of the Week are selected in a vote by the league’s head coaches, who are not eligible to vote for their student-athletes.

Patriot League Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
Alexa Riddle, Navy, Sr., Forward, Tomball, Texas/Tomball Memorial

*Riddle scored five points with one goal and three assists to lead Navy to wins over Sacred Heart (5-3) and FDU (3-2) last week.
*She had a goal and two assists in the first half of the Mids’ win over the Pioneers on Thursday.
*The Tomball, Texan native assisted on the first goal in a 3-2 win over the Knights.

Patriot League Women’s Soccer Midfielder of the Week
Rylee Rives, Navy, Sr., midfielder, Arlington, Texas/Martin

*Rives scored a team-leading three goals last week to help Navy beat Sacred Heart (5-3) and FDU (3-2).
*The Arlington, Texas native scored two goals, including the game-winning goal, in Saturday’s 3-2 win over the Knights, which is a career high. Both of her goals came within the first 36 minutes of the game.
*The veteran midfielder scored the game-winning goal in the Mids’ 5-3 win over the Pioneers on Thursday.

Patriot League Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Eliza Fisher, American, Jr., Defender, Plymouth, Michigan/Plymouth

*Fisher led an Eagles defense that limited Maryland to four shots on goal in a 2-0 win over their Big Ten opponent.
*She played all 90 minutes against the Terps, helping American improve to 1-1 on the season.
*The junior defender helped AU to the program’s first win over a major conference opponent since beating Alabama (SEC) in 2004.

Patriot League Women’s Goalkeeper of the Week
Addison Roemer, American, Fr., Goalkeeper, Leesburg, Va./Riverside

*Roemer stopped four shots and posted a shutout in the Americans’ 2-0 win over Big Ten opponent Maryland on Thursday.
*The Leesburg, Virginia native stopped all four of the Terps’ shots on goal, two in the first half and two in the second, to record her first clean sheet in her third collegiate game.
*Their performance enabled the Eagles to earn the program’s first victory over a major conference opponent since beating Alabama (SEC) in 2004.

Patriot League Women’s Soccer Rookie of the Week
Bella Conti, Army West Point, Fr., Forward, Allentown, NJ/Allentown
*Conti finished the week with two goals and an assist, helping the Black Knights to a 2-0 record with wins over UMass (3-2) and Central Connecticut State (2-0).
*She became the first Army West Point soccer player since 2019 to score two goals in a game with two goals in the first half in Thursday’s 3-2 win over the Minutewomen.
*She recorded an assist in the second minute of Sunday’s 2-0 win over the Blue Devils.

Honorable Mentions
Brooke Steel, American, Sr., Forward, Medford Lakes, NJ/Shawnee

*Steel came on as a substitute and scored the first goal in the Americans’ 2-0 win over Big Ten opponent Maryland on Thursday. The veteran forward fired a shot from close range in the box that hit the post in the 59th minute to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

Izzy Kadzban, American, Gr., Midfielder, Longwood, Fla./Lake Mary

*Kadzban scored American’s second goal in a 2-0 upset win over Big Ten foe Maryland, finding the back of the net in the 63rd game to give the Eagles their first win over a major conference opponent since 2004.

Bella Cooke, Army West Point, Jr., F, Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry

Cooke provided an assist in the Black Knights’ 3-2 win over UMass before scoring the game-winning goal in a 2-0 victory over Central Connecticut State on Sunday.

Keira Vesy, Army West Point, Sr., Defender, Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River

*Vesy played the full 180 minutes and led Army West Point’s defense in wins over UMass (3-2) and Central Connecticut State (2-0). Vesy and the Black Knights’ defense have allowed an average of 0.75 goals against in four games this season.

Teresa Deda, Bucknell, Sr., Midfielder, New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle

*Deda scored five points in two games last week, recording a goal and an assist in Bucknell’s 3-0 win over UMBC. She scored a goal in the 50th minute of a loss to No. 7 Pittsburgh.

Maggie Ousouljoglou, Lehigh, Jr., goalkeeper, Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan

*Ousouljoglou had a .889 save percentage with eight saves to lead Lehigh to a 2-1 victory over BIG EAST opponent Seton Hall on Thursday.

Baylee DeSmit, Loyola Maryland, Sr., Forward, Towson, Md./McDonogh

*DeSmit’s 12th-minute goal was the game-winning goal in Loyola Maryland’s 1-0 win over George Washington on Thursday. The veteran forward ran onto a long pass and beat the goalkeeper into the top right corner for her second goal of the season.

Jess Korman, Loyola Maryland, Sr., Defensive Player, Suffern, NY/Suffern

*Korman was instrumental in the Greyhounds’ defensive effort that limited George Washington to six shots, two on goal, in a 1-0 win Thursday. The veteran defenseman assisted Baylee DeSmit on his game-winning goal in the first period.
