New Penguins enjoy success at women’s basketball team’s annual golf outing

The new coaching staff of the Youngstown State women’s basketball team and 10 new student-athletes got a first taste of the support the program offers during the annual golf outing at Knoll Run in Lowellville on Saturday.

A sold-out field of 34 foursomes enjoyed continuous sunshine and temperatures in the 80s on Saturday for the head coach’s first outing Melissa Jacksonterm. The trip was the 21st in a row since 2003 and many familiar faces were on the way to meet the new Penguins.

“We had an absolutely beautiful day for our annual golf outing!” said Jackson. “Thank you to all the sponsors, supporters and volunteers who made it a great event. The YSU community is so special and this outing is another example of the wonderful support we have for women’s basketball.”

The golf outing had a long list of corporate sponsors, with YSN Sports and Mike and Janet Murray serving as co-title sponsors. NEO-3 (Jim Rosenburg), Frank and Joyce Frattaroli, Shapes Unlimited, Jack Colonna, Mid-American Sales, Inc. (Mike Owens), Marucci & Gaffney Excavating Company and the Hura Family were Horizon League level sponsors. Penguin level sponsors included Kaleel Brothers, Roy & Karen Peters, Wells Fargo Advisors (Michael A. LaRocca), Belleria Struthers, Belleria Hubbard, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Vestibule Club, Sforza & Carmela’s Catering, Malutic Live (Austin Malutic), Liber Limited LLC, Guenther Hladiuk, Jack Cramb, Greenwood Chevy, the YSU Foundation, Blue Storm Athletic Club (Justin Magestro), #1 Cochran and AP O’Horo.

There were also nearly 90 punch sign sponsors, and records were broken at the auction and 50/50. Former basketball student and athlete Mady Aulbach Her ticket was drawn 50/50 and she donated her half to the program.

The weather provided ideal conditions and Adam Capretta’s foursome managed a 54 to win the men’s competition by one stroke.
