Augusta County offers firearm safety courses for women only

STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) – Augusta County is offering women-only home firearm safety and Double A tactical weapons classes. Students will learn the NRA’s three rules for safe firearm handling, the leading causes of firearm accidents, how to load and unload specific types of weapons and more.

Jim Woods, a certified NRA instructor, owner of Double A Tactical Firearms Training and general manager of Nuckols Gun Works in Staunton, is an instructor at these courses and says the goal of the women who enroll in his courses is often to protect more than just themselves, such as their families.

“If someone gets into a predicament, it’s never the same as standing with your toes on the line and aiming at a stationary target,” Woods says. Woods’ training courses emphasize firearm safety and defense mechanisms for women, as opposed to traditional target shooting. Woods says the courses are intended as a safety measure, especially in today’s society.

“It goes back to the old saying: It’s better to have something and not need it than to need it and not have it,” Wood said.

Only persons 21 years of age or older may apply for a concealed carry weapon permit. The courses meet the requirements for a concealed carry weapon permit in Virginia.
