However, Qantas has recently plummeted in the World Airline Awards rankings.

The Flying Kangaroo has moved up from fifth to 17th and now to 24th place in the last three years.

In the international airline awards announced in June, Virgin Australia dropped from 46th to 54th place, and Qantas subsidiary Jetstar fell from 69th to 74th.

In February, new Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson announced half-year pre-tax profits of $1.25 billion, a 13 percent decline from the corresponding figure twelve months earlier.

It has been a turbulent year in the boardrooms of Australian airlines.

Bonza went into voluntary bankruptcy in April, less than 18 months after its first flight.

It has now come to light that 60,000 customers have to pay out of their own pockets, 323 employees are entitled to wages and holiday entitlements and 120 trade creditors have been short-changed.

On July 30, Rex filed for bankruptcy and canceled flights between major cities, but regional routes will continue to be offered.

Qantas and Virgin have offered to accommodate passengers with invalid Rex tickets at no additional charge.

Last week, Rex administrators asked the Federal Court to postpone the sales deadline until November.
