A 33-year-old hiker was tragically killed in a fall on Bill Williams Peak, a prominent peak near Aspen, Colorado. According to the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, August 24. At approximately 2:13 p.m., emergency dispatch received a call about an injured hiker. The caller reported that the hiker had fallen 50 to 100 feet onto a ledge and sustained life-threatening injuries. According to the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, the climber’s GPS coordinates were determined using a Garmin InReach satellite communication device and a cell phone PIN sent by the reporter.

Mountain Rescue Aspen (MRA), a volunteer rescue team well-versed in the area’s unforgiving conditions, was mobilized at 2:20 p.m. Due to the steep and rugged terrain near Williams Peak, the Army National Guard High Altitude Flight Training Field dispatched a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter. Although several rescue helicopters were requested, some were unable to respond due to adverse weather conditions.

At 3:01 p.m. a helicopter from Care Flight of the Rockies was able to take off and at 3:29 p.m. rescue teams were deployed to the field. At approximately 5:10 p.m., the National Guard helicopter brought rescue personnel to the location of the injured hiker. However, upon arrival, it was determined that the hiker had succumbed to his injuries.

Fifteen members of the Mountain Rescue Aspen team were involved in the rescue operation, which underscores the complexity and danger of the mission. Following this tragedy, the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office urged all outdoor enthusiasts to exercise caution while climbing and to be aware of their surroundings and personal abilities.

“Accidents can happen to anyone,” the sheriff’s office stressed, urging climbers to have appropriate first aid and survival equipment on hand, as rescue operations in Colorado’s rugged highlands often take longer than expected.

Located in the Rocky Mountains, Bill Williams Peak is the highest peak of the Williams Mountains west of the South Fork in the Independence Pass area outside Aspen, Colorado. The summit reaches an elevation of 13,389 feet.

The identity of the deceased hiker has not been disclosed. Our thoughts are with his friends and family.
