Lydia Ko ends eight-year wait for a major title with victory at the Women’s Open

Olympic champion of Paris 2024 Lydia Ko won her third major title at the Women’s British Open in St. Andrews on Sunday, August 25.

For the New Zealand golf superstar, it was the first major triumph in eight years; he won by two strokes.

Last year’s winners Lilia Vu took second place together with world number one Nelly Korda (USA), Ruoning Yin (People’s Republic of China) and Jiyai Shin (Republic of Korea).

Vu’s costly miss towards the end of the Old Course put Ko in pole position for her third major title when she birdied the 18th hole to finish seven under par.

It crowns the perfect month for the 27-year-old, who was crowned 2024 Olympic champion just a few weeks ago in Paris.

With a bronze and a silver medal at previous Games, she completed her medal haul and became the most decorated golfer in Olympic history.

“This is pretty surreal,” she said, enjoying her victory.

“Winning the gold medal in Paris was a dream, but this is almost too good to be true.

“To hold this trophy in my hands now is something very special. I’m not sure if I’ve realised it yet. I’m very honoured to be the champion, it’s been so tough out there this week.”

Ko’s last major victories came in 2015 and 2016, when he won the Evian Championship and the Chevron Championship, respectively.
