Family meets for vigil on a day that should have been a wedding

Instead of a joyful ceremony, Walker’s fiancée and their families gathered for a vigil on Sunday to mourn their loss.

“We’re supposed to be at my wedding right now. This is supposed to be a wedding at the Royal Manor, not a funeral,” said Walker’s fiancée Shauntea Weaver.

What was supposed to be a celebration turned into a nightmare for Weaver.

“Unbelievable, ruthless,” she said. “Kirk was unbelievable. He was the best, best person that ever lived.”

“My heart hurts so much and I’m really angry. I’m angry,” said Walker’s father, Kirk Walker Sr.

Susan Walker wore her “Mother of the Groom” T-shirt to the vigil.

“This is what we were supposed to wear today… But they took my baby away from me. He wanted this wedding so much,” she said. “And my nephew, they took my nephew away from me too.”

McLaurin’s parents were in town for their nephew’s wedding from North Carolina.

“Today was the day. They didn’t make it,” said father Robert McLaurin Sr. “My son was his best friend.”

“I got the call and I lost control. I started screaming. I said, ‘What do you mean he’s gone?'” said mother Betty McLaurin.

Family members said Walker and McLaurin were killed on their way home from the wedding celebrations.

Walker’s father has a message for the wrong-way driver.

“I want them to see my face. I just want them to know it’s not over. It’s not over,” he said.
