Binko scores the decisive goal in the second half and the women’s football team takes an away win against Iona

Result New Rochelle, NY – Experienced striker Izzy Binko scored a goal early in the second half to help the visiting UMBC women’s soccer team to a 1-0 non-league victory over the Iona Gaels at Mazzella Field on Sunday afternoon.

Senior back Lauren Reid initiated the game-winning play with a long through ball from well behind the halfway line. Binko ran through the middle of the field and then grabbed the ball at the top of the box. Iona’s backup goalkeeper Savannah Rogers stormed out of her goal, allowing Binko to play around Rogers on the left and then score an easy goal without guarding the goal.

UMBC, which improved to 1-2, dominated the first half but could not get a goal past Gaels’ starting goalie Kayla Kalbaugh. Binko had a golden opportunity with 24:20 left in the half but narrowly missed the goal after running full steam down the left sideline. In the 38th minute Abby Joseph evaded some defenders and sprinted through the middle of the field, but a Gael thwarted the chance with a sliding tackle in the penalty area.

Iona (0-2-2) almost scored with 41:40 minutes left in the second half when Mia Davis’s attempt from the left side of the penalty area curled just wide of the far post.

The Retrievers, who had no chance against Iona in Baltimore last season, survived a late threat as the Gales had a few chances in the box. Twice the ball bounced inches from the goal, but the hosts couldn’t get a foothold on a potential equalizer against Freshman. Amara Coddwho played the last half and recorded her first career win.

Codd and starting goalkeeper Cowles Abbey each of them saved two shots for the Dawgs, who outscored the Gaels’ shots on goal by 15-12.

Iona took six corner kicks while the Retrievers had three opportunities.

UMBC will return to action on Thursday night at Retriever Soccer Park, facing Drexel.
