Body of paddleboarder recovered from Rampart Reservoir near Colorado Springs

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials, along with search and rescue teams, found and recovered a body in Rampart Reservoir near Woodland Park Sunday morning.

According to CPW, a paddleboarder was reported missing from the reservoir on Saturday afternoon amid high winds. Colorado Springs Fire Department initially responded and began searching for the man, whose identity has not yet been established. Eventually, a helicopter and then CPW were called to assist in the search. At around 1 a.m., the man’s body was discovered about 65 feet underwater. It was pulled from the water an hour later.

“This is a tragedy and we extend our condolences to the victim’s family and friends,” said Grant Brown, CPW’s Marine Evidence Recovery Team leader, in a statement. “We have seen far too many water-related deaths in Colorado. We ask that anyone on or near the water wear a life jacket.”

The El Paso County coroner will identify the body and determine the cause of death. The water temperature in the reservoir was estimated to be about 16 degrees when the man fell in, and Brown spoke about the inherent risks of water activities under certain conditions.

“When someone is immersed in water that cold, the shock of being immersed in the cold water can cause the whole body to convulse and make you unable to swim,” he said. “You can die within a minute or two.”

According to an unofficial count by CPW In Colorado, there were over 30 drownings from recreational activities this year.

The man’s dog initially remained on the paddleboard but was later able to swim safely to shore.
