Local tree felling expert warns of falling trees during ongoing hurricane season

As the remains of Debby move through the region, residents are reminded to keep a close eye on the trees near their homes.

This is especially important to remember because the hurricane season already lasts several months.

After weeks of heavy rains and waterlogged ground in July, the owner of a local tree removal company is warning of an increased risk that could cause some trees to fall.

On Thursday, August 8, News 13 spoke with Adrian Burns, owner of Burns Tree and Crane. Burns said there were several signs of potentially dangerous trees.

He explained the importance of paying attention to trees that are leaning or showing signs of decay.

He says it’s also important to pay attention to the less obvious signs.

“Look for fungus, look for rot – take a stick and poke into the trunk of the tree. Sometimes it gets all the way in and you know the tree is hollow in the middle,” Burns said.

He says if it has rained all day or a severe storm like Debby hits, the soil around the trees becomes waterlogged, putting the roots at greater risk.

Burns recommends not taking any chances when a tree needs to be cut down and instead leaving it to a professional tree removal service.
