Mike Norvell talks about Florida State’s inability to gain momentum against Georgia Tech

What now after Florida State Seminoles shock loss to Georgia Tech? | Can Noles still make the CFP?

The Florida State Seminoles and head coach Mike Norvell lost a close game against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in Dublin, Ireland to begin the season. Much of the Seminoles’ disappointment in the season opener was due to Florida State’s inability to build and maintain momentum.

After the game, Norvell addressed these difficulties with the dynamics of the game, praising Georgia Tech but also acknowledging that Florida State needs to make better use of its own opportunities.

“We’re two experienced teams,” Mike Norvell said. “They obviously have a lot of experience with returns in their offense. So when we had a good drive, we had a good game, they came out and did what a good offense should do. Obviously there are a lot of things we have to do to get them out of rhythm and make them uncomfortable.”

Florida State opened the game with a long touchdown drive and a two-point conversion. Georgia Tech immediately responded with a touchdown drive of its own. Even in the last two drives of the game, the Seminoles were able to score and tie the game, while the Yellow Jackets quickly responded with a drive of their own and set up the game-winning kick.

“You know, we’re here on offense, there’s some third-down opportunities that we’ve got to capitalize on, and like I said, it starts with me and making sure I put our guys in the best position to be successful,” Norvell said. “But that’s part of this game, and I knew it was a very capable team when you look at the group they brought back. I have respect for their defensive coordinator. I obviously went up against him last year.”

Throughout the game, Florida State had trouble stringing together offenses and had to settle for long field goal attempts on several offenses. Georgia Tech, on the other hand, often drove the ball forward on long offenses, which slowed the game down.

“We knew they were going to present some things that were going to be challenging, but that just puts even more emphasis on taking advantage of the opportunities you get. I think we had maybe seven, maybe eight drives in the game, we scored on four of them, but ultimately we had to settle for field goals twice, and you have to get the ball in the end zone, and they did a good job of getting stops in those moments. We had a fourth down that we were aggressively trying to get, and, you know, we just missed. It was a good call, a good play by their corner to get the stop,” Norvell said.

“These are all things that make the difference.”

It’s been a frustrating start to the season for Mike Norvell and Florida State. Now the Seminoles must recover quickly and find a way to gain momentum for the rest of the season.
