Jarrod Evans: Wales still on Harlequins link-up’s radar

Evans has not played for Wales since 2021 and has fallen out of favour alongside the likes of Callum Sheedy as Ben Thomas, Sam Costelow and Ioan Lloyd were used as links by Gatland last season.

Evans played a minor role in his first season at Harlequins due to injury, although he did play in 17 matches. He is also second choice at the Stoop behind England link-up Marcus Smith.

“It’s been going pretty well, even if it’s been a little disjointed in terms of my playing time,” Evans said.

“I had a few aches and pains last year. Overall, I enjoyed it. I got better. I was out of my comfort zone. I can’t complain. I’m just excited to get this season started.”

Evans is still getting used to life outside Cardiff.

“I don’t want to be one of those people who looks back on their career and says, ‘I wonder what that would have been like,'” Evans said.

“Circumstances forced me, I suppose, in a direction in which I had to go.”

“But at the end of my career, I will grow by getting out of my comfort zone and even having to live away from home. That will make me better as a person and a player in the long run.”

Evans has reunited with Harlequins head coach and his former Arms Park boss Danny Wilson and is enjoying working with backs coach Nick Evans.

“When you’ve been at a club for so long, playing the same way and hearing the same voices, it’s just refreshing to hear someone else’s opinion on how the game is played,” Evans said.

“I know Danny from Cardiff but Nick Evans has brought a lot of diversity in terms of his perspective on the game. He gets a lot from New Zealand through his connection there.

“I’ve learned quite a few subtleties, but the principles remain the same.”
