Alisson Becker: Liverpool goalkeeper rejected move to Saudi Arabia

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker says he turned down a move to Saudi Arabia this summer because he is “really happy” at Anfield.

The Brazilian joined the Reds from Roma in 2018 for £66.8 million, making him the most expensive goalkeeper in the world at the time.

Alisson, 31, has won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, EFL Cup and Club World Cup in his 261 appearances for the Reds.

Fabinho, Roberto Firmino and Jordan Henderson left Liverpool for Saudi Arabia in 2023, but Alisson says he wants to stay in Merseyside.

“I want to fulfil my contract and finish it here or sign a new one. I am really happy here. My family is happy,” said Alisson, whose contract runs until 2026.

“I never got to the point where I talked about salaries and things like that. I was just interested, but when you hear about the numbers the other players are getting, you get a little attracted. That’s normal.”

Alisson added that “now is not the right time” for a move to Saudi Arabia.

Liverpool are close to signing Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili to compete with Alisson.

The 23-year-old international from Georgia is said to be moving to Anfield for a reported £30 million.

“I knew about it (Mamardashvili) before it was announced on social media and that is a good message for me because the club cares about my opinion,” Alisson said.

“They are doing the right thing, but as far as I am concerned, as long as I have my contract here and as long as I am happy here, the club is happy with me and my family is happy here, I will stay.”
