In all my years of testing mattresses, the Saatva Classic is one of the most impressive mattresses I’ve tried. This handcrafted luxury innerspring mattress wouldn’t look out of place in a 5-star hotel, but there’s more to it than just its good looks.
The Saatva Classic is the best mattress of 2024 for any sleeper looking for a bed that offers excellent lower back support and full-body pressure relief. It comes in three firmness levels and two heights, so it can be customized to suit different sleeping positions and body types. The benefits are industry-leading, with a one-year trial period, lifetime warranty, and free mattress installation and disposal of the old bed.
Right now, you can save $400 on the Saatva Classic in this year’s Labor Day mattress sales and deals, which is the best price I’ve seen since Memorial Day and Black Friday. Here’s why I’d buy it this Labor Day…
Why I recommend the Saatva Classic mattress
I always recommend the handcrafted Saatva Classic for most sleepers because it can be customized to each individual’s preference. It comes in three firmness levels (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm) and two height levels (11.5″ or 14.5″).
In Tom’s Guide’s Saatva Classic mattress review, my colleagues praised the special lumbar support, excellent pressure relief, and stable edges – features that make this a great mattress for back pain. When I tested it in a Saatva Viewing Room, I found that it scored well in all of these areas as well.
Because the mattress has a double layer of springs and minimal foam, it doesn’t retain much heat, so people who sweat while sleeping should sleep comfortably on it.
As someone who has unpacked and unrolled many heavy mattresses, I appreciate Saatva’s free White Glove delivery service, which includes assembly of the mattress and disposal of your old mattress and foundation at no additional cost. The mattress also ships flat, so you can sleep on it right away.
All sizes of the Saatva Classic are currently discounted by $400, which is the lowest price since Memorial Day and Black Friday last year. I don’t expect prices to drop any further before the holiday weekend, so if you’ve had your eye on the Saatva Classic, now is a great time to buy.
What it’s like to sleep on it
My colleagues tested a Saatva Classic queen-size mattress in the Luxury Firm firmness rating, which scored 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The mattress softened slightly over the year-long testing period, but my colleague still felt like he was sleeping on the surface rather than sinking into it.
If you want a bed with deep body contouring and plenty of pressure relief, I would recommend purchasing one of the best memory foam mattresses this year instead.
The Saatva Classic received top marks for support and pressure relief. One of my colleagues noticed relief from his back pain after switching from his previous mattress to the Classic. Another tester, who was pregnant during part of the testing period, was able to sleep comfortably on her side.
The Saatva Classic Hybrid also features strong, stable edges that allow you to sit and sleep on without fear of falling overboard. Since it has more springs than foam layers, there’s less risk of trapped heat disrupting your sleep.
While the Saatva Classic’s design promotes airflow, it compromises its ability to isolate motion. However, it still performed well in our objective and real-world testing. We’d only call this a potential problem for light sleepers who share a bed with a restless partner.
Another potential downside is the 600 pound weight capacity, so if you and/or your partner are on the heavy side, I would recommend the Saatva HD as it can support up to 1,000 pounds.
Design and materials
The Saatva Classic is available in three firmness levels and two height profiles – but no matter which combination you choose, the construction remains the same. Here’s a breakdown of the design and materials:
- 3″ Euro Pillow Top: The pillowcase is covered with organic cotton and treated with antimicrobial agents. There is special quilting in the middle to provide better lumbar support.
- Lumbar support zone: These include Saatva’s patented Lumbar Zone Active Spinal Wire and a high-density, ertiPUR-US certified memory foam lumbar crown.
- 14.5 gauge recycled steel coils: This top layer of individually wrapped innersprings provides contouring, support and pressure relief. They are reinforced in the middle to provide additional lumbar support.
- 13-gauge hardened steel support coils: This bottom layer of innerspring provides stability and support from edge to edge.
- High density foam rails: These enclose the perimeter of the mattress and provide additional edge support and stability.
The Saatva Classic is Greenguard Gold certified, guaranteeing low chemical emissions and non-toxic materials. Instead of fiberglass or chemical flame retardants, Saatva uses a plant-based safflower pulp flame retardant barrier. Each Saatva mattress is handcrafted to order in one of Saatva’s factories in the USA.
Buy the Saatva Classic mattress if…
✅ You have back pain: The Saatva Classic’s high-density lumbar support and lumbar area ensure proper alignment and relieve discomfort, as was the case for one of our testers who experienced relief from back pain.
✅ You sleep hot: With a double layer of springs and an organic cotton cover, air flows freely through the Saatva Classic. It’s not a cooling mattress per se, but most people who sweat while sleeping should find it just as comfortable.
✅ You value high added value: The Saatva Classic is more than a quality mattress—it also offers industry-leading extras like a one-year trial, lifetime warranty, and free white glove delivery with optional mattress removal. Plus, it’s handcrafted in the USA from nontoxic materials, making it the total package.
Do not buy the Saatva Classic mattress if…
❌ You have a tight budget: Although the Saatva Classic offers good value for a hotel-quality mattress, it is on the higher end of the price range. For a mid-range alternative that offers luxurious sleep for less, check out our DreamCloud mattress review.
❌ You need a mattress with a high weight limit: With a maximum weight capacity of 600 pounds, the Saatva Classic is just above average. Check out our guide to the best mattresses for heavy people to see our top picks that can hold up to 1,100 pounds.
❌ You want to sink into your mattress: Even the softest version of the Saatva Classic doesn’t offer that sinking feeling. The Purple Plus mattress offers the contour of memory foam, but without the heat retention.
