A 60-year-old woman was examined at the base of Monument Mountain after she fainted near the summit on Saturday.

GREAT BARRINGTON – Rescue crews came to the aid of a 60-year-old hiker who passed out near the summit of Monument Mountain on Saturday.

Members of the Great Barrington and Egremont fire departments, Southern Berkshire Ambulance and Great Barrington police responded to the 911 call. Eight people climbed the trail, first in ATVs and then on foot, to reach the woman and her family, Great Barrington police Sergeant Adam Carlotto said. The woman, who was on a hike with family members, was evaluated at the scene.

On the way down, she was able to walk part of the way and took an SUV the last mile to the parking lot on Route 7 at Monument Mountain. There, an ambulance picked her up and took her to Fairview Hospital for evaluation.

Monument Mountain, a Trustees of Reservations property, is popular with hikers because its 1,640-foot summit offers scenic views.

Captain Josh Seile of the Great Barrington Fire Department said members of the Egremont Fire Department rushed to help because “we were a little short-staffed.”

When Seile saw the rescue workers returning with the woman sitting in the front of the SUV, he said, “It’s a good day.”

According to Seile, it is not possible to drive to the summit in an off-road vehicle because the upper section of the path is narrow, rocky and steep.

Stan Lee of Monterey, a family member of the woman, expressed his gratitude for the work of the rescue workers.

“The rescue was incredible – EMS, fire department – they did a great job,” Lee said. “Thank you very much.”
