VAT-free days for disaster preparedness are underway

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – If you didn’t stock up on storm supplies this year, or you’re running low on supplies after Hurricane Debby, the state of Florida is offering a helping hand. Saturday marked the start of the state’s second sales tax-free day of the year dedicated to disaster preparedness.

Until September 6, residents can purchase essential items for use in severe weather, such as batteries, flashlights, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and portable generators, sales tax-free.

The measure was passed by the Florida State Legislature and signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis to help people prepare for storm season.

At Home Depot on University Parkway in Sarasota, customers were greeted outside with signs advertising the savings opportunity.

“I think it’s good that they’re allowing batteries, flashlights, smoke detectors and things like that. That’s what we need to prepare for storm season. And I think it’s great that they’re making it tax-free, especially to help people after Hurricane Debby hits,” said Krystle Crofut as she went shopping with her family Saturday morning.
