HANOVER, NH – Marshall had more shots on goal and possession than Dartmouth in the final 88 minutes of play on Friday night, but a 2nd-minute goal for the hosts was enough to secure a 1-0 win.

The Herd fired a total of 13 shots, seven of which were on goal, compared to the hosts’ eight total.

“We’re going home proud tonight,” said coach Rafa Simoes. “This group is special. When you see how we play with possession, how we create a lot of chances, then I’m proud of them. I told them how proud we are of the way we play and fight.”

The Herd’s best chance came in the last minute of each half.

In the final moments of the first half, Junior Bailey Fisher took a free kick from a spot where she scored three times from 27 metres last season.

With eight seconds left in the first period, Fisher’s shot overcame the goalie and hit the crossbar. Defender Maria Chaves would score a goal due to the ensuing deflection, but only after the clock had completely returned to zero.

In the final moments of the game, Marshall’s Amelia Compston was brought down in an area just outside the penalty area and inches away from a potential penalty chance to level the game.

It is the Herd’s first loss of the year, dropping them to 0-1-1. With this result, Dartmouth wins its opening game of the season.

goalkeeper Alexis Wolgemuth made three saves, including two saves in the second half. But Daisy Granholm’s goal from the home team in the second half was enough to win the game
