Sports Stories from Enterprsie – 1974 | News, Sports, Jobs

I still unfold the large history binder loaned to me by Saranac Lake native Marilee Dupree—not only the 1951 Saturday Evening Post magazine with the detailed history of Saranac Lake, but also a page from the 1974 150th anniversary issue of the Enterprise, written by the students of Saranac Lake High School.

By the way, in the photo of the three pretty high school students that was shown here last week, the name of the third young lady had been obscured: it was none other than Naoma Stevens.

Also in the portfolio, an 1899 “Map of the Adirondack Wilderness” compiled by SR Stoddard, Glens Falls, NY, is printed on pure canvas — “Twenty-first (revised) edition.”

I will take the map to Leifheit & Littlefield, Land Surveying, 54 Park St. in Tupper Lake, where they can copy the map for their company and perhaps make a copy for me as well.

Owen Littlefield is my second nephew. … Look, I don’t know what to call him because his father, Kevin Littlefield, is actually my nephew.

TRI-LAKES VARSITY ON THE ROAD – “Everyone is on the road tonight as the Northern League and Mountain Valley League basketball seasons come to a close. The Saranac Lake Redskins travel to Norwood Norfolk for a rematch against the Flying N’s while the Tupper Lake Lumberjacks head to Potsdam for their rematch against the Sandstoners. Both Tri-Lakes teams won their first meetings with today’s rivals. A win tonight for the Reds would give them sole possession of second place. Tonight’s game against Potsdam is a must-win for the ‘Jacks, who are on the verge of making the playoffs. The Lake Placid Blue Bombers, who have had a disappointing season so far, head to Schroon Lake tonight. In their first meeting on the Bombers’ hard court last December, Schroon Lake handed the Bombers their fourth loss, 54-41.”

Back at the stock

The back cover of this special edition of Enterprise contained a sports column “Achievements of an athlete” by pj. I don’t know who pj is, but if any reader knows, please contact me.

“Son-of-a-Gun,” one of the top stories in his column, began with our oldest son, Keefe Michael Riley, a member of the Plattsburgh State hockey team.

“Keefe Riley, a former left winger for the Redskins hockey team, plays for the Plattsburgh University hockey team.

“Joe Gladd, another former Redskin skater, transferred from Cowles Community College in Kansas and is also a member of the PSUC icemen.

“The Plattsburgh-Press Republican noted in separate articles over the weekend: ‘Elmira’s three power-play goals overshadowed a stellar performance by PSUC freshman Keefe Riley, who scored the Cards’ only two goals, both times when the locals were playing shorthanded.'” (For readers who are not hockey fans, shorthanded means your team has a player in the penalty box.)

Then another story …

“Larry Wilbur and Keefe Riley, two welcome additions to the PSUC Fieldhouse fraternity, helped pull Plattsburgh State out of a two-game nosedive Saturday night as the Cards came back to beat the Norwich B team 3-1. Wilbur had 58 saves in two games. Riley, a freshman from Canton, assisted on Paul Durant’s opening goal for the Cards at 8:35 of the third period, and Riley scored the final goal three minutes later.”

So Keefe and Joe, former friends from Saranac Lake High School, were back together at Plattsburgh State. Joe, a family friend, is a nice guy with a great personality. Keefe scored a lot of shorthanded goals with SLHS. Players have to stay in their lane, Keefe’s position was left wing… unless the team is down a man, then the entire ice surface becomes your lane and that always cuts Keefe off from the rest.

Keefe and another member of the PSUC team, Tom Jennings, took a semester off at the end of their third year and went to Europe to try out for the Dutch national team. They didn’t make it, but had a great trip, hitchhiking all over Europe. They returned and graduated from Plattsburgh State.

Girls’ varsity team loses – JV wins

I wish more first names were used in the sports reports. Anyway, here is the roster of the 1974 Girls Redskin Varsity Basketball team; the “Lady Reds” Stars were Bomyea, Hall, Homburger, Howard and Woodward.

“FT. COVINGTON – The Saranac Lake Redskins girls basketball team suffered its second loss in as many games yesterday, falling to the Salmon River Shamrocks 43-29.

“Coach Bryan Bissonette had high praise for the play of Debbie Hall, who scored eight points for the Reds, consistently grabbed rebounds and played a good defensive game.”

The JV team roster included Collins, Cruickshank, Parsons, Ratelle and Daniels.

“The red and white juniors shook off the Shamrocks in the second quarter and put the game out of reach in the second half, outscoring the hosts 23-8. Kathy Ratelle played an outstanding game for the Redskins both offensively and defensively, scoring 22 points from the field. She made several key defensive plays, including five steals that turned into points for the Redskins.

“Teammate Brenda Cruickskank played her best game yet, contributing eight points and several outstanding defensive plays under the boards.

“Other scorers were Betty Collins with four, Nancy Parsons with three and Nora Daniels with one. The entire team was in action in the second half, with several first-year players showing promise, including Kathy Reynolds, Lydia William, Mary Nason and Nora Daniels.”
