AUBURN – A woman has died after being thrown from her vehicle on Interstate 80 in Auburn late Wednesday night.

The California Highway Patrol said officers responded to the westbound side of the highway shortly before midnight.

There, emergency responders found that a vehicle had crashed into the center divider and concrete pier of the Nevada Street Bridge near Highway 49, ejecting the driver. Officials said the vehicle continued driving for several hundred yards before coming to a stop.

Investigators said the driver was not wearing a seatbelt. Her name was not released.

The CHP is still investigating whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident and believes there was no mechanical failure, according to a CHP statement.

Correction: CBS13 reported in an earlier version of this story that the woman was struck by a semi-truck. That was incorrect. According to the CHP, she was not struck by a semi-truck. The woman died after being ejected from her car.
