Very unusual rule imposed by Princess Martha on her wedding guests | Royal | News

Princess Märtha Louise of Norway has a very unusual rule on her wedding day.

The Princess and her fiancé Durek Verrett will make a unique fashion choice during the three-day celebrations in Norway.

When the celebrations begin on Thursday 29 August, guests will gather for a meet-and-greet party in the garden of Hotel 1904 in the heart of Ålesund city.

In a departure from royal tradition, which often calls for ball gowns with demure, floor-length hems and covered shoulders, the couple reportedly asked their guests to stick to a “sexy and cool” theme.

Martha and Durek’s friends and family will take a boat trip along the Geirangerfjord to the village of Geiranger. The day will end with a Latin American wedding party at Hotel Union.

Princess Martha explained why the place is so close to her heart: “We are incredibly happy to be able to celebrate our love in the beautiful surroundings of Geiranger.”

“It means a lot to us to gather our loved ones in a place so rich in history and intense natural experiences. Geiranger is the perfect place to celebrate our love.”

On Saturday, August 31, parish priest Margit Lovise Holte will marry the couple in a ceremony at the historic four-star hotel, which features a spa, three restaurants, indoor and outdoor pools, its own nightclub and even a vintage car museum.

It is expected that the “sexy” dress code on the wedding day will change to black tie and guests will be expected to wear tuxedos and long evening gowns.

Martha is 52 years old and the older sister of Crown Prince Haakon. Her fiancé is a 49-year-old shaman.

The two began dating in 2019 after bonding over their shared spirituality; the princess runs her own alternative therapy center.

The wedding could be an expression of her new-found sense of freedom after Martha steps down from royal duties in November 2022.

She said at the time: “There was an uproar because I took a different path. There was a lot of criticism, especially because I am spiritual; in Norway that is taboo.”

“I guess the Norwegian people have decided that because of Durek’s views it is best for me to step down.”
