Pedestrian with mental health issues hit by truck on Interstate 75

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ohio (WKEF) – Two lanes of Interstate 75 were closed for over an hour after a pedestrian was struck by a car on Friday, August 23rd.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, a driver stopped in the area of the State Route 725 and Interstate 75 ramp around 11 a.m.

Lt. Dallas Root, commander of the OHSP’s Dayton Post, says the vehicle’s passenger was suffering from a mental disorder, got out of the vehicle, which pulled to the side of the road, and eventually ran into the road and directly in front of a commercial vehicle.

The man suffered serious injuries, but Root says his injuries are not life-threatening at this time.

Root says the driver of the truck attempted to take action and saw the pedestrian walk into the roadway. He tried to get out of his way, but the pedestrian was determined to get in his way one way or another.

“This is an unfortunate and very unusual circumstance to experience on a highway. It’s just another important reminder to avoid distractions. You never know what kind of unpredictable situation may happen in front of you that you may need to respond to,” Root said.

The man was taken to Miami Valley Hospital by paramedics.
