The US Secret Service has placed at least five agents on leave, including the head of the Pittsburgh field office, as a result of its investigation into last month’s Assassination against former President Donald Trump, according to several sources familiar with the matter.

Among those placed on leave were an agent from Trump’s department and three others from the Pittsburgh office, according to two federal law enforcement sources. It is unclear if all of these actions are disciplinary, as agents are regularly placed on leave during investigations for a variety of reasons, including mental health concerns.

The Secret Service’s Internal Affairs Division continues to investigate how a 20-year-old gunman managed to fire eight shots, including one that grazed the Republican presidential candidate’s ear, from a rooftop near Trump’s speech in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13.

Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi would not confirm the agents’ leave of absence and said he would not comment on the personnel matter. However, he said the Secret Service’s “mission assurance review is progressing and we are investigating the processes, procedures and factors that led to this operational failure.”

He added that the Secret Service “requires the highest professional standards of its personnel and that all identified and proven violations of policy will be investigated by the Office of Professional Responsibility for possible disciplinary action.”

Disciplinary action varies depending on an officer’s alleged conduct. When Secret Service employees are placed on disciplinary leave, they still receive their paycheck and report to the office. Instead of performing their normal day-to-day duties, they are typically assigned to paperwork or other administrative tasks.

In addition to administrative leave, officers subject to further disciplinary action may also be suspended or suspended without pay, which typically also results in the revocation of their security clearance. That is not the case in this case.
