Acura is working on an all-electric sports car to replace the NSX

It sounds like the sorely missed Acura NSX is being prepared for its comeback.

According to Automotive News, the luxury brand has confirmed that it is hard at work on a battery-powered sports car. And the automaker is not hiding the fact that the vehicle, which will be built on parent company Honda’s new 0-series electric platform, could be the next to bear the legendary name.

Shinji Aoyama, the automaker’s global executive officer, revealed the first major details about the car during a briefing at the Monterey Car Break. He spoke mainly about the 0-series platform that will be the heart of the new model. Currently, Honda’s engineers are focused on making the technology thinner so they can “realize a low-height vehicle.” In theory, it would be a great basis for a next-generation NSX, something Aoyama highlighted in his comments.

“We may not call it NSX, but it is a type of NSX vehicle,” the CEO told the assembled media, according to Motor1.com.

However, we will have to wait a little longer for the possible new NSX. The first electric car in the 0 series, a sedan with the Honda logo, is scheduled to hit the market in 2026. The all-electric sports car could appear soon after, possibly even as early as 2027.

It’s easy to see why Honda and Acura were keen to bring back the NSX. The low-slung vehicle was something entirely new when it debuted in 1990. It combined bold styling — which has aged quite gracefully — with a groundbreaking V-6 that evoked the kind of performance enthusiasts expected from European sports car makers, not the Japanese auto giant. The second-generation NSX, launched in 2015, may not have made the same impression, but it’s one of the most fondly remembered performance vehicles of the last decade.

If the new electric car does indeed turn out to be the next NSX, it will have to live up to high expectations. The last version of the car, the 2022 farewell Type S edition, featured a hybrid powertrain that combined a 3.5-liter V6 with two turbochargers and three electric motors. The combined output was 600 hp and 650 Nm of torque, which is presumably the bare minimum for the upcoming electric car.
