Broadway Curve Improvement Project Impacts Traffic Near Airport

PHOENIX – Significant traffic delays are expected near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport this weekend due to work to improve the Broadway Curve.

In addition, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) weekend travel advisory for highways, there will be closures or restrictions on four additional sections of the Valley Highway system from August 23-26.

In addition to the planned construction work, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s campaign rally on Friday afternoon and evening could also cause traffic congestion in the area of the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, near the Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway and Glendale Avenue.

What’s happening at the Broadway Curve Improvement Project this weekend?

Work on the $75 million Broadway Curve project, which will take place Friday through Monday, includes lane restrictions in both directions of Interstate 10 and the closure of southbound State Route 143 (Hohokam Expressway) east of the airport.

Westbound I-10 will be narrowed to two or three lanes from US 60 (Superstition Freeway) in Tempe to 24th Street in Phoenix from 8 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday. At the same time, eastbound I-10 will be reduced to three lanes from Broadway Road to US 60.

In addition, Broadway Road and its on- and off-ramps to I-10 will be closed between 48th and 55th Streets.

In the meantime, SR 143 southbound from the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway to I-10 will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday for a traffic detour as part of the Broadway Curve Improvement Project. This closure also includes the Loop 202 westbound on-ramp to Sky Harbor Boulevard.

44th Street southbound is an alternate route from Loop 202 to Sky Harbor, according to ADOT.

What other restrictions are in place on the Valley Freeway this weekend?

Of the other four areas to watch this weekend, one is in central Phoenix and the others are on the east side of the valley.

In Phoenix, southbound I-17 will be closed from the I-10 “Stack” interchange near McDowell Road to the I-10 “Split” interchange near Sky Harbor from 9 p.m. Friday to noon Saturday for road construction. In the other direction, I-17 will then be closed from the “Split” interchange to Buckeye Road from 9 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday. Motorists can avoid the closures on I-10 through downtown Phoenix.

Further northeast to Scottsdale, the northbound Loop 101 Pima Freeway at Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday for bridge work, as will the northbound ramps at Shea Boulevard, Cactus Road and Raintree Drive. Traffic may be diverted to the access road and re-enter Loop 101 at Princess Drive/Pima Road. The closure is part of an ongoing highway improvement project.

In Mesa, westbound US 60 from Superstition Springs Boulevard to Gilbert Road will be reduced to three lanes from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for road construction, as will the westbound on- and off-ramps on that stretch. ADOT recommends using Baseline Road or Southern Avenue to avoid potential congestion on the highway.

Further south, the eastbound Santan Freeway, Loop 202, will be closed from Gilbert Road in Chandler to Williams Field Road in Gilbert from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for a widening project. This closure includes the eastbound Loop 202 ramps at Arizona Avenue, McQueen Road and Cooper Road. Drivers can bypass the closure via Pecos Road or Germann Road.
