BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – Rowing has been approved as the 22nd sport sponsored by the Southeastern Conference and the 13th women’s sport to host an SEC championship, announced Friday following a unanimous vote by SEC athletic directors.
Four SEC universities – Alabama, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas – currently sponsor rowing. According to SEC bylaws, a conference championship can be held if at least 25 percent of conference members sponsor a sport and it is approved by the conference’s athletic directors.
“The addition of Oklahoma and Texas provides an opportunity to support a new SEC Championship experience for rowing athletes,” said SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey. “We look forward to supporting the growth of rowing in the Southeastern Conference.”
The first SEC Rowing Championship will be held in May 2025 at a location to be determined.
Because the SEC has not previously sponsored a rowing championship, the Alabama and Tennessee rowing programs have participated in Big 12 championships since the 2014–15 athletic year after competing in Conference USA prior to their Big 12 participation.
