Woman dies in fire near Kensington, 13 people left homeless

An elderly woman was killed in a fire in the Harrowgate area near Kensington on Friday morning, injuring two others and leaving a total of 13 people homeless.

The fire broke out around 4:30 a.m. in a row house in the 1800 block of East Russell Street. The fire spread to four surrounding houses on both sides of the row house.

Firefighters arrived at the scene and were able to rescue the residents who had fled to rooftops. Rescue workers found the woman on the second floor of the house, where the fire had originally broken out.

Paramedics treated two injured people whose injuries were not life-threatening. Investigators have not yet identified the woman who died in the fire. NBC10 reports that the Red Cross and Salvation Army are assisting people who lost their homes in the fire.

Philadelphia Deputy Fire Chief Charles Walker told NBC10 that firefighters were not sure how many people lived in the home that initially caught fire, but they did not find any working smoke detectors in the home.

Police told NBC that one person had been arrested in connection with the fire, but Walker also told the station that it was unclear what connection there was between the arrest and the incident.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated, authorities said.
