Slow down: New radar devices will be installed near schools in northeast Baltimore

City officials said emergency crews will begin installing new automated speed cameras in Northeast Baltimore on Monday, the same day that students in the city’s public schools return to school. But they did not provide details on when the new cameras will begin capturing images of speeders and issuing tickets.

The approximate locations are:

  • Between the 4500 and 4800 blocks of Hamilton Avenue near Hazelwood Elementary/Middle School;
  • Between the 3600 and 3900 blocks of Echodale Avenue between Arts & Ideas Sudbury School and Gardenville Elementary School;
  • Between the 5000 and 5300 blocks of Hillen Road near Northwood Elementary School;
  • Between the 6000 and 6200 blocks of Belair Road between Glenmount Elementary/Middle School and City Neighbors Charter School.

Cameras in school zones issue tickets if drivers exceed the speed limit by 12 mph or more between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. Fines are $40 and do not result in points on your license, according to a press release from the city’s traffic department.

In June, additional automatic radars went into operation in some school zones in West Baltimore. A map showing the locations of all automatic radars in Baltimore, including those that ticket trucks in restricted areas and for red light violations, is available here.

The speed cameras on Roland Avenue in northwest Baltimore will also be slightly expanded: The cameras’ surveillance area will now include the 5600 block of Roland Avenue, expanding the current surveillance area by one block.
