The severe storm on Tuesday, August 6th, ruined the day for some property owners. The arduous cleanup is underway and the City of Billings is helping with some guidelines for disposing of branches, twigs and leaves.

First, let’s get one thing clear…

Only organic tree material is accepted! No other garbage!!

The city intends to shred and compost the material. For this reason, no other material will be accepted. Do not throw in broken garden furniture, broken flower pots, plastic toys and other garbage. The city workers may simply turn you away.

I know I’ll just pile everything up in the alley for the city to pick up for free.

Bzzt, wrong!

That’s a false assumption. The City of Billings doesn’t pick up tree debris in alleys, period. You want to pile it up on the side of the road? The City will pick it up, but not for free. You’ll have to arrange that over the phone.

The Green Bin

Of course, you can fill your green bin in Billings… with leaves and small tree debris. No heavy wood. And the lid must be completely closed so the city can pick up the bin without spilling and creating another mess. If you overfill the bin, city employees may just walk by.

Do you have the means to remove the fallen tree debris? Do you want to remove them from your property as quickly as possible? Billings is here to help with drop-off locations where you can drop off the branches and twigs until August 24th. And this service is free. Here are the locations:

Clevenger Park at 840 Bench Blvd

Cottonwood Park at Colton Blvd & 54th St W (access via 54th)

Lampman Park south of Monad Road on south 30th Street, west side of the park

Wilson Park – Field of Dreams at Riverside Road and Hannon Road

Amend Park, across from Newman Elementary, accessible via S Billings Blvd at Stone St

Then there is the landfill

The Billings Regional Landfill is located at 5240 Jellison Road and will be accepting tree debris for free over the next few weeks through August 24. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The landfill will also be open specifically for the disposal of tree material on Sunday, August 11, during the same hours.

Cleaning up your land after a big storm is undoubtedly a big project. And while all the work is still on you, there is a destination for all the products of that labor. Billings will have compost for a naturally beautiful community, and your property will be restored to its former glory.
