Symphony’s Concert on the Lawn takes place for the 37th time with the program “TV Classics”

The Owensboro Symphony is preparing for a night of nostalgia when it presents its 37th annual Concert on the Lawn on Saturday. Music Director and Conductor Troy Quinn will lead the symphony in a special program called “TV Classics,” featuring popular television theme tunes.

U.S. Bank has sponsored the free event since its inception in 1987, while the lawn in front of Kentucky Wesleyan College has always provided the backdrop. Symphony executive director Gwyn Payne said the picnic will begin at 5:30 p.m., with the concert scheduled for 7 p.m.

A new feature at this year’s concert is that some of the music will be combined with video clips on a big screen. Quinn said the event will also offer visitors the opportunity to experience the full theme songs in their original composition and in their entirety.

“This year’s concert will be full of nostalgia,” said Quinn. “Everyone will hear something they know, from Dallas and Magnum PI to the Flintstones and Star Trek. There are thousands of TV theme songs and we’ve chosen some of the most iconic. This will be a fun and interactive experience for everyone.”

Payne said the event will feature more food trucks than ever, and encouraged families to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Those who prefer a more structured environment can reserve tables and meals from Moonlite Bar-B-Que in advance. A table with chairs and dinner for eight is available for $400, while a table and chairs without a meal can be reserved for $200. Individual meals without seating are $25 per person.

Visitors who reserve a table can also take part in a table decoration competition, this year’s theme of which is television classics.

“We’re excited to see what people come up with,” said Payne. “The Concert on the Lawn is known for its family-friendly atmosphere and offers plenty of activities for children. U.S. Bank will host several games and activities for children, making it an event that the whole family can enjoy.”

Payne added that a tent will be available for young and aspiring musicians to visit and learn about the instruments and the orchestra.

In addition to the Owensboro event, the symphony will bring the TV Classics concert to Madisonville on Friday at the Glema Mahr Center for the Arts. This ticketed performance will benefit the center’s program.

Quinn also has a few surprises in store for the audience, including some singing performances and maybe even a few film clips.

The Owensboro Symphony’s Concert on the Lawn has been a cherished tradition since 1987. It marks both the end of summer and the beginning of a new symphony season. With a 75-piece orchestra and over 20 pieces of music, this year’s event promises to be one of the most memorable yet, according to Quinn.

“Television and film music is very close to our hearts and is an important part of our program,” said Quinn. “This is a fun concert for all the family. The musicians are very approachable as there are no barriers to the orchestra. It’s a relaxed atmosphere and we encourage people to come and experience it in person.”
