Lincoln considers improvements to railroad crossings near 33rd and Cornhusker

LINCOLN, Nebraska (KLKN) – Authorities are considering changes to two busy railroad crossings in north Lincoln.

The city announced Thursday that it will host an open house next month to help officials plan the project.

The goal is to reduce delays and increase safety at railroad crossings near 33rd Street and Cornhusker Highway.

Over the past 30 years, six people have died in accidents at the 33rd and Adams Street railroad crossings.

According to the Lincoln Transportation and Utilities Department, they are among the most dangerous border crossings in Nebraska.

Almost 65 trains are on the tracks every day, blocking the roads for at least 3.5 hours a day, the LTU said.

The Railroad Transportation Safety District is leading the project, which preliminary estimates suggest could cost up to $75 million.

A website dedicated to the project says the money will come from a variety of sources, including state and federal funds.

Officials will provide further details and ask for public participation at an open house scheduled for September 5.
