A Sacramento County man who was sleeping as a passenger in a semi-trailer died early Wednesday morning after the vehicle’s driver also fell asleep and the semi-trailer went off an embankment, California Highway Patrol officials said.

The unnamed 72-year-old driver was heading north on Highway 89 in Siskiyou County, near the Shasta County border, at 12:30 a.m. when he fell asleep at the wheel, according to the CHP. Another man was asleep in the back seat of the vehicle at the time.

The Shasta County Coroner’s Office identified the second man as 32-year-old Amrit Pal Singh of Rancho Cordova.

Officials at the CHP office in Mount Shasta said the tractor-trailer left the road and struck a tree on its side.

The driver woke up and tried to regain control of the vehicle, but oversteered, causing the taxi to go off the embankment and crash into several trees.

The front of the truck was heavily damaged before it came to a stop, the CHP reported, while the trailer blocked the southbound and northbound lanes of the highway.

Emergency crews took the driver to Mercy Medical Center in Mount Shasta. He was wearing a seatbelt and his injuries were minor, the report said.

Singh was seriously injured in the crash and taken to Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills. He died around 3:30 a.m. on Aug. 21, according to Shasta County Deputy Coroner Lt. Tyler Thompson.

No other vehicles were involved in the collision.

The Shasta County Coroner’s Office notified Singh’s next of kin before his name was released to the public, Thompson said in a news release issued Thursday morning.

The medical examiner is planning an autopsy and the case remains under investigation by the CHP and the medical examiner’s office, according to Thompson.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 530-225-5551.
