A major advantage of access to the best streaming services is to watch a variety of trendy shows and movies. However, you almost feel like you are not tied to a new streaming show, it seems is constantly cancelled. With a whole bunch of streaming shows being cancelled in 2024, they’ve disappeared from streaming services, one TV fan has freaked out about it, and I’ve never felt more seen.
It can be incredibly disappointing to be a fan of a show that stops airing after one season. I’m not the only one who gets dejected when a streaming series (or 20) gets canceled too soon, like a TV fan @444timelord addressed the recent cancellations:
When I looked at the long list of streaming shows that were taken off the air, I had no idea how many we had to say goodbye to. (Of course, not all of them were in the recent past, but all of them were quite surprising to fans, especially The Acolyte.) The X-user went on to say that he sees no point in watching streaming shows if they’re going to be cancelled so quickly, and I have to agree with him.
For example, My Lady Jane was canceled after one seasondespite its 92% Rotten Tomatoes rating and large fan base, which is partly because its audience numbers were not immediately large enough to earn a place in Nielsen’s top 10 streaming rankings. Fans quickly Petition to save the Amazon Prime seriesbut similar efforts have been made for Emmy-worthy shows like The great And Thought Hunter without convincing their respective studios to renew them.
Of all the series posted, I was personally most disappointed when it ended after three seasons: Anne with E. Fans like me were devastated by the surprise cancellation of the series by Netflix than the Anne Shirley TV adaptation did a great job of dealing with modern issues while still being set in the late 19th century. Considering the series ended when Anne was on the cusp of adulthood, it would have been nice to see her start a new chapter in her life. But I guess we have to leave it for fanfiction or for Hopes for a film conclusion become reality.
Good point to also address K-dramas. As mentioned, K-dramas often only last one season, but are designed to be complete with the final episode. Typically, a South Korean series can have 12 to 16 episodes, each lasting 45 to 60 minutes. So you know you’ll have to say goodbye to a K-drama series that got you hooked, but at least you know that every series has a beginning, a middle, and not an abrupt end.
The good news is that @444timelord has given fans a show recommendation that will probably not end anytime soon. One of the best TV shows of 2022, Interview with a vampire, is renewed for a third season, which is a real relief. With its strong performances and faithful adaptation of the book series, the AMC series has to continue telling the gothic horror story that Anne Rice started.
With so many shows being cancelled recently, one TV fan said everything I was feeling. You almost don’t want to be tied to a new show or have to mentally prepare for the possibility of it being cancelled. At the same time, you can always hope that there is still plenty of new content coming to your Streaming schedule.
