The sheriff said a man drove his car onto the runway at Campbell Airport near Grayslake Tuesday morning and climbed into a parked plane before resisting arrest by officers.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a Toyota speeding back and forth on a busy runway at approximately 11:55 a.m. Thursday. The incident occurred at Campbell Airport (22731 Townline Road in the unincorporated community of Grayslake).

The driver of the Toyota, later identified as Erik Deanda-Gonzalez, 30, of Zion, later parked his car and began entering the airport hangars, according to Christopher Covelli, chief deputy with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

When deputies arrived, they found Deanda-Gonzalez in an airplane parked near a taxiway.

Covelli said airport staff informed officials that the plane did not belong to Deanda-Gonzalez and that she had no business being on it.

Deanda-Gonzalez exited the plane and spoke with the deputies. They all went back to Deanda-Gonzalez’s Toyota.

Deputies were asking Deanda-Gonzalez questions about his behavior at the airfield when, without warning, the man turned around, ran back to the plane and tried to crawl back inside, Covelli said.

Sheriff’s officers pulled him from the plane and took him into custody. Deanda-Gonzalez actively resisted arrest, prosecutors said.

Deanda-Gonzalez said he was at the airport to meet “Bob Lee Swagger” from the movie “Shooters,” prosecutors said.

Covelli said officers found ammunition in Deanda-Gonzalez’s vehicle before it was towed from the scene, but no firearm was found.

The FAA was notified of the incident. The Lake County District Attorney’s Office filed charges of trespassing on an airport runway, trespassing at an airport, resisting a peace officer, unlawful possession of firearm ammunition and criminal trespass.

Deanda-Gonzalez was taken to the Lake County Jail and appeared in court on Wednesday.

He was released on remand after prosecutors informed Lake County Judge Michael Nerheim that the charges did not warrant parole under Illinois’ SAFE-T Act.

“Our legislature has decided in its wisdom not to make trespassing at an airport a criminal offense. So you cannot be arrested,” the judge told the man during the court hearing.

Deanda-Gonzalez is scheduled to appear in court on September 3.
