Watch the trailer for the New Jersey-set film “Exhibiting Forgiveness” starring André Holland and Andra Day

“Moonlight” star André Holland and Oscar-nominated Grammy winner Andra Day star in the upcoming film “Exhibiting Forgiveness.”

The film, for which a trailer was released on Thursday, was shot in New Jersey (see filming locations below).

Artist Titus Kaphar’s feature film directorial debut, “Exhibiting Forgiveness,” is inspired by the life of the painter and sculptor.

Holland plays an artist named Tarrell and Day plays his wife Aisha, a singer.

The painter is confronted with his painful past when his estranged father La’Ron, played by Tony nominee John Earl Jelks, comes to visit and seeks reconciliation with him.

Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor plays Joyce, Tarrell’s mother, who urges her son to forgive his addicted father.

“Exhibiting Forgiveness,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, will be released in theaters on October 18.

The film was shot in Essex, Union, Hudson and Bergen counties.

Locations include various places in Montclair, such as Lackawanna Plaza; homes in Orange, Hillside and Allendale; Gene’s Liquors in Paterson; Hudson Plaza Motel in Bayonne; Ace Auto Salvage in Kearny; East Orange General Hospital; Alden Street in Orange; Eagle Rock Reservation in West Orange; and Paul Korlesky Park and Baker Street in Hillside.

Joe Marra, project manager at the New Jersey Motion Picture and TV Commission, told NJ Advance Media that filming in the state cost $7.8 million.

Day was nominated for an Oscar for the 2021 film “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” and won a Grammy for the film’s soundtrack. In the trailer for “Exhibiting Forgiveness,” Day can be heard singing the song “Bricks.”

“Moonlight,” starring Holland, won the Oscar for Best Picture, and Ellis-Taylor was nominated for an Oscar for the 2021 film “King Richard.”
