Mahomes donates $5 million to Texas Tech Athletics

LUBBOCK, Texas (PRESS RELEASE) – Texas Tech Athletics announced Thursday that alumnus Patrick Mahomes II made the final donation of the historic Fearless Champions campaign when he and his wife, Brittany, donated $5 million toward the $242 million South End Zone and Dustin R. Womble Football Center project.

In recognition of the gift, Texas Tech will name the soon-to-be-completed walkway at the Womble Football Center after him. The three-time Super Bowl champion will also be honored as the namesake of Texas Tech’s quarterback meeting room and the offensive coordinator’s office in the new South End Zone Building at Jones AT&T Stadium.

“When we launched this campaign, Patrick was just a freshman and now it’s fitting that we approach the end of the campaign with a gift of our own,” said Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt. “We couldn’t be prouder to announce this gift from Patrick and Brittany Mahomes. We are so proud of Patrick for all he has accomplished and how he has continually supported Texas Tech on a global level.”

In just six seasons as Kansas City’s starting quarterback, Mahomes has created one of the NFL’s most dominant eras, highlighted by three Super Bowl titles in the last five years and six appearances in the AFC Championship Game. The Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII last season, where Mahomes was named Most Valuable Player for the third time in his career. At just 28 years old, Mahomes is the first Red Raider in program history and only the fifth NFL quarterback ever to win three Super Bowls.

Despite all of his success on the field, Mahomes remains an ardent supporter of his alma mater. Mahomes has used every free weekend in the Chiefs’ schedule over the past three seasons to support the Red Raiders, attending away games in Houston (2021) and Kansas (2023) and returning to campus in 2022 for his Texas Tech Hall of Fame and Ring of Honor induction against Baylor. He also regularly attends Texas Tech basketball and baseball events, home or away, during the Chiefs’ offseason.

Mahomes’ gladiator logo has been a staple for Red Raiders fans since Texas Tech agreed to a 10-year partnership with adidas in July to become the official footwear, uniform, apparel and accessories supplier. As part of the partnership, adidas has released co-branded Texas Tech and Patrick Mahomes apparel featuring his signature gladiator logo. This marks the first time an adidas athlete partner’s logo has been featured on official college apparel.

“There is no better ambassador for Texas Tech athletics than Patrick Mahomes,” said head coach Joey McGuire. “He is arguably the greatest brand in sports, not only because of his success on the field, but also because of what he and his family do off the field. Since being hired here at Texas Tech, I have realized how much Patrick truly loves this university and the football program, and this gift further underscores that. On behalf of our entire program, we cannot thank Patrick and Brittany enough for the impact they have on our student-athletes and the future of Texas Tech football.”

Mahomes’ donation brings Texas Tech’s fundraising effort to $115 million for the south end zone and Womble Football Center project, surpassing the athletic department’s original goal of $100 million. Texas Tech will announce more details on the Fearless Champions campaign in the coming days.
