Women’s basketball publishes non-league schedule

PROVIDENCE, RI – Head coach of the Providence College women’s basketball team Erin Batt announced its 2024-25 non-conference schedule on Thursday, August 22. The non-conference schedule consists of one exhibition match and 13 regular season matches. The exhibition match and six regular season matches will be played at Alumni Hall in Providence, Rhode Island. The team will also play three matches in Cancun, Mexico (November 28-30) as part of the 2024 Cancun Challenge.

Fans will be able to see the Friars’ 2024-25 team for the first time on Oct. 29 when they host Southern Connecticut State University in an exhibition match at Alumni Hall in Providence, Rhode Island. The Owls compete in NCAA Division II in the highly competitive Northeast 10 Conference. SCSU posted a 19-13 overall record last season and made it to the NE10 championship game, where it fell to top-ranked Bentley 64-49.

The regular season schedule begins on November 4 at Alumni Hall against Mercy University. The Mavericks compete in NCAA Division II as part of the East Coast Conference. Mercy finished the 2023-24 season with an overall record of 20-10 and a berth in the NCAA Tournament, where it lost to Bentley 63-50 in the regional quarterfinals.

Providence stays at home and faces Ivy League power Columbia on Nov. 8. The Lions posted a 23-7 overall record last season and were selected for the NCAA Tournament. Columbia was eliminated in the First Four by Vanderbilt, 72-68.

The Friars are on the road for three consecutive games against Vermont (November 12), Boston College (November 17) and Dayton (November 21). The Vermont Catamounts of the America East Conference are coming off a 25-12 season and have advanced to the 2023-24 WNIT semifinals. Boston College (ACC) and Dayton (A10) finished the 2023-24 season with 14-19 and 12-19 records, respectively.

On Nov. 24, Providence returns to Alumni Hall to face Delaware. The Blue Hens, who compete in the CAA, finished last season with an overall record of 11-20.

The Friars will travel to Cancun, Mexico, to play three games as part of the 2024 Cancun Challenge against VCU (Nov. 28), Wisconsin (Nov. 29) and San Diego State (Nov. 30). The event is sponsored by Triple Crown Sports and will be played at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya. VCU, a member of the Atlantic 10, posted a record of 26-6 last season and was selected to participate in the inaugural Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament (WBIT). Big Ten opponent Wisconsin posted a 15-17 overall record last season and advanced to the quarterfinals of the WNIT. The San Diego State University Aztecs posted a 22-13 overall record and advanced to the Mountain West Championship Game.

Providence returns to the Ocean State to face rival Rhode Island on Dec. 4. The game will be played at the Ryan Center in Kingston, Rhode Island. URI posted a 21-14 record last season and made it to the Atlantic 10 Championship Game, where it fell to top-ranked Richmond 65-51.

The Friars will close out the nonconference schedule with three consecutive home games at Alumni Hall against Brown (Dec. 7), Penn State (Dec. 11) and Merrimack (Dec. 14). Last season, Brown finished the year with a 16-11 record. Big Ten opponent Penn State posted a 22-13 record and advanced to the WBIT semifinals. Merrimack, which competes in the Northeast Conference, posted a 12-19 record last year.
