Collin Schlee QB2, 7 captains named and Mose Phillips

In this edition of Virginia Tech Football News, head coach Brent Pry names his second quarterback, seven captains are named and a young safety takes advantage of a big opportunity in camp as the regular season draws closer in nine days.

One battle that was closely watched in camp was between UCLA transfer Collin Schlee and Pop Watson over who would be the replacement for Kyron Drones. In the end, and to no one’s surprise, Pry announced that Schlee will be QB2 for the season that begins next weekend at Vanderbilt.

Schlee has a lot of experience from his time at Kent State and UCLA, and while there will likely be some plays for him in the offensive playbook, the question is, how often will he play unless something happens to Drones? Freshman-to-be Davi Belfort has shown some glimpses of what he could be down the road, but for now he’s just learning behind Drones, Schlee and Watson.

Wednesday was a busy day for Pry, as he not only announced that Schlee would enter the season as QB2, but also named seven captains for the season. The news was posted on Virginia Tech Football X Account.

Cole Nelson, Sam Brumfield, Drones, Dorian Strong, Da’Quan Felton, Kaden Moore and Peter Moore were named captains.

Another question heading into training camp was how the Hokies would fill the safety spot opposite Jalen Stroman. There were several options, but Mose Phillips seemed to have the most appeal and will likely get the nod in the opening game at Vanderbilt.

“I don’t think anyone plays boundary (safety) better than Mose right now.”

If the Hokies can keep Dorian Strong and Mansoor Delane in their current positions, it will be of great importance to the secondary this season.
