Huawei’s long-awaited triple-folding phone is set to launch “next month,” according to a company executive, suggesting months of speculation may soon be coming to an end.
Yu Chengdong (also known as Richard Yu), CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group, revealed the information during a press conference about Huawei’s STELATO S9 electric vehicle. As Huawei Central reports, a customer asked when he could buy the Huawei tri-folding device and Yu replied, “Next month, in September.”
The device, which would be the first of its kind, is rumored to have a 10-inch internal screen, almost as large as the display of the 10th generation iPad.
Last week, photos of Yu using the new foldable device clearly showed three panels stacked into a slab form factor. A large round camera bump, similar to that of the Huawei Mate 50 Pro, was also visible.
A previous picture showed Yu unfolded with the devicewith two wrinkles and a visible punch-hole selfie camera.
Triple arms race
The announcement is the latest milestone in a behind-the-scenes race between Samsung, Honor and Huawei to produce the world’s first triple-folding device.
While Samsung’s original Galaxy Z Fold Although the phone was the first foldable device to hit the market, the Korean tech giant may have gotten ahead of the game this time.
Honor CEO George Zhao confirmed that the company filed a patent for a tri-fold design in July, and rumors of a tri-fold device from Samsung have been circulating throughout the year. Yanko Design has hinted that Samsung could use its Flex S screen concept, with reports from Tom’s Guide And CNET further speculation about this potential new product.
However, this apparent confirmation from Huawei itself suggests that the company will win the race to launch a triple-folding phone. We will follow the development with interest and bring you the news as soon as the company officially announces it.
