Deadpool & Wolverine break an 8-year Marvel movie trend and there’s a reason in the universe for it

Summary

  • Deadpool & Wolverine breaks a franchise trend that has been evident throughout the last two Deadpool films.
  • Reynolds’ Green Lantern jokes are out of the question for Deadpool 3.
  • This could be because the antihero killed Reynolds in Deadpool 2 before filming Green Lantern.

Deadpool and Wolverine breaks a trend from the other films in the franchise, but there is a reason in the universe that explains why. One of Deadpool 3The more surprising element was how brutally honest it was about the MCU. It poked fun at how messy Marvel’s Multiverse Saga was, and even said that Wolverine would enter at a low point. It’s no surprise that Deadpool and Wolverine was full of meta commentary and references, as this is Wade Wilson’s typical comedy style, but it was refreshing to see Marvel not afraid to poke fun at themselves.

This also led to Deadpool’s tendency to poke fun at Ryan Reynolds and his career. There were a few references to his wife Blake Lively, who also makes a cameo as Lady Deadpool, and a hilarious reference to his romantic comedy, The suggestionHowever, Reynolds’ first superhero appearance was not mentioned, Green Lanternwhich is still considered one of DC’s worst films years later. It is the first Deadpool film that does not contain a reference to it, but there is a reason in the universe that Deadpool 2.

Why Deadpool and Wolverine’s box office results are not a suitable test of the MCU’s current success

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is a box office hit, but its success is not the best test of whether audiences are fully behind the MCU.

Deadpool & Wolverine is the only Deadpool film that doesn’t contain any references to Green Lantern

Deadpool and Deadpool 2 make fun of the infamous DC film.

It’s no secret that Reynolds is critical of 2011 Green Lantern. It is clear that he is not the only one, as the film has a critics’ score of 25% and an audience score of 45% on Rotten Tomatoes. Bad reviews led to Green Lantern It was a box office failure, grossing $220 million worldwide against a $200 million budget. Many criticisms of the film were about its generic script, boring characters, and embarrassing CGI. Fortunately, Reynolds has an excellent sense of humor and made the film a recurring joke in the first two Deadpool films.

Dead Pool contains two jokes that are Green Lantern. The first is in the opening scene when the camera pans past a Green Lantern trading card flying out of a wallet. The second joke is just before Wade undergoes his experimental cancer treatment when Wade says, “Please don’t make the super suit green… or animated,“, a reference to Green Lantern’s infamous CGI suit from the film. Reynolds goes even further with his hatred of Green Lantern in Deadpool 2as Deadpool travels through time and kills Reynolds while he Green Lantern Script.

That Deadpool and Wolverine do not refer to Green Lantern was explained in Deadpool 2

The lack of a Green Lantern joke stays true to Deadpool 3’s continuity.

The post-credit scenes of Deadpool 2 make many changes to Deadpool’s timeline. First, the antihero saves Vanessa from death at the beginning of the film and has her appear in the Deadpool and Wolverine cast. Deadpool also kills the version of himself that Fox introduced to the audience in X-Men Origins: Wolverine – who was widely criticised for being speechless and thus clearly different from the traditional character – and Reynolds before filming Green Lantern.

Since Deadpool killed Reynolds before filming his role as Hal Jordan, Green Lantern does not exist in Deadpool’s reality. This means Deadpool can not refer to this in Deadpool and Wolverine, because technically it never happened. Deadpool might still remember this, as he is aware of things outside his universe, but it would also be superfluous to keep harping on about it Green Lantern. Putting a bullet through Reynolds’ head specifically to prevent him from making the film is a serious accusation and gets the message across effectively.

How Deadpool & Wolverine still make a lot of jokes at DC’s expense

Deadpool doesn’t hold back against his rival superhero studio.

While Green Lantern took no hits Deadpool and WolverineDC was not safe from Wade’s meta-humor. The film contains two hilarious jokes aimed at DC, mocking the failures of the DCEU. One DC joke comes when Wade travels through the multiverse looking for a Wolverine who can become the next anchor being of the Fox universe. He meets a Wolverine variant played by Henry Cavill, whom he names “The Cavillrine.“He says Cavill as Wolverine”feels right” and that Marvel “treat yourself so much better than those bastards down the street.

Cavill was a great Superman, but his journey as a character was messed up by the DCEU. He was replaced by David Corenswet in Superman in the DCU, although she returned for a post-credit scene in Black Adam. In particular, Deadpool makes fun of The Rock’s DC character, saying Wolverine will “change the power hierarchy in the MCU.” Dwayne Johnson used this line to hype Black Adam’s DCEU debut, but it fell flat after the film’s disappointing box office numbers. Deadpool and Wolverine does not criticize directly Green Lanternit still sends some jokes towards DC.
