Students arrested after shooting near McLane High School in Fresno, officials say

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — A high school student was arrested after shots were fired outside a Fresno County store Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting occurred in the parking lot of an AutoZone across from McLane High School near Cedar and Clinton avenues.

Before school ended, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, a fight broke out in front of the store in which a student pulled out a gun.

Several shots were fired, causing the students to flee, but only one building and one truck were hit.

Officers rushed to the scene and helicopters circled overhead as they searched for the escaped suspect.

It turned out that the teenager was hiding less than half a mile away in Robert Ascensio’s backyard.

Ascensio says officers were already on his street before he even realized the teenager was there.

“I’m running through my front yard and the cops are standing here and I say, ‘Hey, there’s a kid in my backyard,'” Ascensio recalls.

“And when they got back there, they had their weapons drawn. They were ready, they were prepared for anything.”

The teenager was arrested by officers after being found in the yard.

“We’re going to find out if he was in contact with anyone else, if anyone in the surrounding homes saw or heard anything so we can investigate further,” said Tony Botti of the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.

Ascensio says he has been cooperating with officials and many of his neighbors have surveillance cameras.
