LTU provides project updates related to traffic mitigation issues

LINCOLN, Nebraska (KOLN) – Drivers in Lincoln may have noticed more traffic on the roads lately. On Wednesday, the Lincoln Transportation and Utilities Department provided an update on ongoing road construction projects and efforts to keep traffic moving smoothly.

Several projects, from road construction to railway repairs, are nearing completion. The most complex project is expected to be completed by the end of September.

84th Street

  • Working on 84th Street between O and Van Dorn Street Work is scheduled to be completed on Sunday. According to LTU, a full road closure was required to complete repairs at the intersection of 84th and A streets. The project was extended due to additional identified road damage, extreme heat, scheduling conflicts and contractor labor availability.
  • Starting Monday, LTU will convert the work area to single-lane closures to reduce traffic disruptions.

70th Street between Pine Lake and Yankee Hill Road

  • This Omaha Public Power District railroad repair project is scheduled to be completed by Friday.

56th Street

  • A south-facing track of 56th Street between Pioneers Boulevard and Elkcrest Drive is closed until Thursday due to a Lincoln Electric System project.

14th Street

  • The road repair project at Westbound Yankee Hill Road between 27th and 14th Streets is expected to be completed by Friday. Local westbound traffic will remain closed between 27th Street and Executive Woods Drive.
  • Lane closures on South 14th Street between Pine Lake and Saltillo Road are expected to be completed by September 2. The project remains on schedule.

Leighton Avenue

  • Leighton Avenue between 48th and 56th Street will be closed starting Monday. This work is expected to be completed in early November. LTU recommends taking a detour via 48th Street to Holdrege or Adams Street to 70th Street.
  • Leighton Avenue between 68th and 70th Street The reopening is planned for Saturday, August 31st.
  • Leighton Avenue between 56th and 63rd Street The reopening is planned for the end of September.

To reduce traffic disruptions, LTU requests the following measures:

  • Adjustment of traffic light systems: LTU is monitoring conditions on the affected and major arterial roads and adjusting signal timing where possible. Signal timing has been adjusted at the intersections of 84th and O Street, 70th and O Street, 70th and A Street, and 70th and Van Dorn Street.
  • Keep lanes open: In order to maintain a smooth flow of traffic, LTU makes it a point to keep at least one lane open whenever possible.
  • Minimize closure time: The aim of the LTU is to limit the duration of road closures by planning and scheduling the work as efficiently as possible.
  • Holding contractors accountable: LTU holds contractors accountable for meeting deadlines and requires them to adhere to agreed schedules. Their progress is closely monitored to resolve delays promptly.
  • Make the most of your summer planning: While most major road expansion projects extend beyond the summer due to their complexity, LTU makes targeted use of the summer time to keep the impact on school and other event traffic as low as possible.
