play

Amanda Gorman, a Los Angeles native who recited her own poem at President Joe Biden’s inauguration in 2021, will recite a new poem at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday.

As Vanity Fair first reported, Gorman will publish the poem “This Sacred Scene” in support of Vice President Kamala Harris.

She told Vanity Fair how the poem changed after Biden’s decision to withdraw his re-election campaign and his endorsement of Harris as the Democratic nominee. The poem changed from “a celebration of an incumbent to an expression of hope for what could be, especially given the idea of an African-Indian woman becoming president,” Gorman said.

On the third day of the DNC, which is taking place in Chicago, former President Bill Clinton and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi will be among those giving speeches. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will accept the Democratic nomination for vice president on Wednesday evening.
